Margit Fisch

Margit Fisch, MD, FEAPU, FEBU is Director of the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and Professor of Urology at the University of Hamburg.

She is internationally recognised for her expertise in reconstructive urology, particularly urethral reconstruction, complex urinary diversion and paediatric urology. Her longstanding work in complex lower urinary tract reconstruction includes the development and refinement of urinary diversion techniques. Her habilitation research focused on optimisation ofureterosigmoidostomy and development of the sigmoid rectum pouch.

Professor Fisch’s career combines complex reconstructive practice with academic leadership, surgical education and specialist training. She served as President of the German Society of Urology (DGU) in 2021–2022, becoming the first woman to lead the society. She has also served as President of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) and of the European Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons. In 2023, she was awarded the Maximilian Nitze Medal, the DGU’s highest distinction for outstanding service to urology.
