Advanced Male Urethral Catheterisation Course (UCLH)
This course is for UCLH staff only. To register, email uclh.amuc@nhs.net. The Advanced Male Urethral Catheterisation (AMUC) course trains UCLH staff to manage difficult catheterisation cases using advanced techniques, in line with UCLH policy.
Description
For doctors and nurses skilled in standard urethral catheterisation who wish to improve in challenging male cases, we offer a hands-on training session. This includes personalized instruction from experienced trainers and extensive practice on a simulated model, covering advanced techniques such as UCD-catheterisation.
Before the practical session, delegates must complete e-learning modules. The link is in the registration confirmation email. Please open the link on a personal browser, as the hospital may block access to the external Thinkific learning platform, which is secure and GDPR compliant.
Participants will receive a certificate upon completing the e-learning course, which must be presented on the day of the practical session, either digitally or as a printed copy.
Prerequisites
Healthcare professionals who register for this course have prior familiarity with standard urethral catheterisation and have successfully completed the e-learning component.
Aims
The learning objectives of the Course:
Practice SAFE catheterisation:
1. Safe male urethral catheterisation algorithm
2. Apply no pressure or force at catheter insertion
3. Foley catheterisation risk & limitations
4. Escalate to Urology input when UCD catheter fails
By achieving these aims, participants will enhance their proficiency in managing difficult male urethral catheterisation cases and gain the confidence to handle such scenarios independently.
